We hate to break it to you, but gas is just a fact of life- that release of air is one of the best feelings in the immediate moment.
It’s the after-life of the fart that can be a bit troubling, especially when the air turns on the odour and is left to linger with the surrounding environment. Sure it’s embarrassing but your farts can actually be telling you how your body is functioning.
What does your fart mean?
Farts are a sign that your body has contracted a necessary and healthy amount of fiber, which is a great way for your body to inform you. A fart means that there are good bacteria in the intestines and that the body is working correctly. A fart that is odourless (being of mainly carbon-dioxide) happens more often than people realize, and is perfectly normal. The scent that comes along with farts is usually from hydrogen sulphide, broken down from the various foods that get put in the body. These compounds, when being digested, are part of the process in creating the odour that will accompany the gas that leaves your behind. Now, there are various levels of fart smells, ranging from a mild nuisance to a pungent stank.
Smelling People’s Farts Might Actually Help People Live Longer
The study out of the University of Exeter in the UK found that the hydrogen sulfide gas found in rotten eggs and flatulence could reduce the risk of cancer, heart attack, strokes, arthritis, and dementia.
So the next time someone lets one go in your presence, consider loudly thanking that person and letting the stink sink in before running in the other direction. Or, since scientists have yet to confirm that smelling farts is as valuable as delivering their compounds straight to cells, at least remember to stop and appreciate that hydrogen sulphide isn’t all bad.
But if you really want to avoid gas buildup…..
