The 3rd Advocacy Seminar which consists of star speakers of current and ex-judges of the courts of Malaysia was held in Kuching last weekend with a total attendance of more than 100 senior and junior associates. This event was organized by Legal Plus. Legal Plus is a group led by YAB Tan Sri James Foong, Former Federal Court Judge of Malaysia, YAB Tun Zaki Azmi, Former Chief Justice of Malaysia and Ms Catherine Eu, former Executive Director of the Bar Council of Malaysia, and together with their peers of Legal Experts seek to educate young lawyers with their long association with the law and those involved in its creation. We were lucky to be able to attend this seminar as well as cover the event.
The speakers for the event is as follows:
- YA Justice Dato’ Lee Swee Seng Judge, High Court, Malaya who delivered “How to Prepare for Trial”
- Y Bhg Dato’ V. Sithambaram Advocate & Solicitor, High Court Malaya who delivered “Examination-in-Chief: Much Neglected”
- YA Justice Dato’ Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera Judge, High Court, Malaya who delivered “Effective Cross-Examination of Expert Witnesses”
- Y A Dato’ Varghese George Judge, Court of Appeal, Malaysia who delivered “How to Corral A Witness In Cross Examination”
- YA Dato’ Mary Lim, Judge Court of Appeal, Malaysia who delivered “Submission: How It is Done”
- YA Datuk Wong Dak Wah Judge, Court of Appeal, Malaysia who delivered “Persuasive Presentation in the Appellate Court”
- YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Abdull Hamid Bin Embong Retired Judge of Federal Court Malaysia and Mr Tan Kee Heng Advocate, Sabah & Sarawak who delivered “Advocacy in the Federal Court”
There was also a Q&A with Recognized Panelists of Judges with a special appearance of YA Datuk Yew Jen Kie who is currently presiding over the High Court of Sarawak. Tan Sri James Foong made an impressive closing statement to those who are present.
One of the topic touched was to return the Judiciary system of Malaysia to its former glory and for young lawyers to step up and be daring to put forth their opinion in court. The highly engaging seminar has created an impact to the Sarawakian participants as this is the first time this event was held in Sarawak. Many participants from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu flew in for the two-day seminar.
